Friendship, like love is a very highly romanticized term. Very seldom are either of them bestowed unconditionally. Most of the time friendship and even love are granted conditionally, based on what the other party has to offer.
If the other party has nothing attractive to offer, then there is no love or friendship.
Unconditional love or friendship exists on this planet only as a very rare treasure.
Actually, Man's Best Friend, the Dog, is a perfect example of Conditional love or friendship. (I am a very great lover of dogs by the way).
Always by your side (as long as there's food).
Ready to defend you (because it's their instinct and you are the meal provider).
Really, most of the time a dog is better than most of the friends most people have.
I know it sounds bad but pure, basic human instinct, if it exists, is to turn tail and run the other way, at the first sign of trouble. Every person for themself. Not to follow that instinct requires a move away from basic instinct and towards higher, noble thinking. a move from self and towards "Community".
